    Fuel tap /petrol cock

Like 5twins says buy yamaha the aftermarket are thinner then clean, flatten polish the selector face like the thread suggests. That 4 hole valve will leak internally, an external leak will be the seal on perimeter of the selector. Don't discount a leaky petcocck bolt seal, or the petcock-tank...

    Confirmation of XS model

All models of XS650 use a 19x1.85 front wheel. Looks like a 1979 SPII with the one year only alloy 19 16 spoke wheel set. The specials would have had disk rear brakes.

Need help with a lever starter.

The engine oil can leak INTO the starter through the shaft seal. Not common but it can happen.

Need help with a lever starter.

Try jumping the solenoid terminals? check your battery to frame ground strap. How does the starter sound? They are pretty reliable but an oil leak can mess up the inside.

    New here!

PS don't forget that 6mm over the cam tensioner :twocents:don't use a torque wrench on t hat one, just snug it with a 10mm on a short 1/4 ratchet and bunch of wobble extensions. That one little bolt is expected to keep about 4" of head gasket leak free.

can't adjust timing because of lobe play.

set the the plate screws so the plate can be rotated with a screwdrive in the slot but not so loose that it flops on it's own, now use a wrench on the alternator crank bolt to bring the cam around into the full open position. now set the gap. and static check timing. Many of us use the...

What have you done to your XS today?

Sounds like you are pursuing an excellent troubleshooting plan. Often as not poor running is a death by 1000 cuts chain. Keep eliminating "maybe" trouble spots and you will end up with a solid reliable runner. Points systems can be very reliable with a good running bike, but fact is a good...
