    Exhaust tape??!

Not sure I understand the exhaust tape for anything other than covering up a rusty pipe and making it rust even faster, unless there is a way to coat it before covering it?

Stalling as soon as clutch lever is released.

My 83 XJ650 is easy to put on center stand, '78 XS650 is painful and I have to have my hard sole boots on to do it. BMW is piece of cake and a heavier bike. Center stand is lubed , I think the balance is off on the '78 center stand or the stand is taller or something

Stalling as soon as clutch lever is released.

If they were stuck, he would stall/surge forward when he put it in gear right? Either the engine can't handle the load or the Transmission is seized. Even with the transmission, it may not be siezed, but it may not be going into first gear? Can that happen? Tap down on shift but it does not go...

    Painting Tins. No really...

Did the clear coat today. Came out great, hopefully no issues curing. I have the original emblems from the bike and they are in great shape. The mounting holes were welded over and I'm going to just apply them with some custom cut VHB tape.

Stalling as soon as clutch lever is released.

The 2 bikes I had similar issues, it was a lean carb. While idling, can you quickly throttle up w/o hesitation? If you put the choke on, does it still do it? In both cases (XJ650), my idle mix was too lean and in one case, I needed to bump up the pilot jet. One of the bikes just took more time...

Take a gander at my spark plugs.

Anyone who services their own bike has to buy the tools to do so. Even a cheap sync gauge set from Amazon will do the trick. Just make sure after its synced that you swap the gauges to compare. the cheap ones often come to you not agreeing with each other. There are other choices for non...

Vinegar for de-rusting, what concentration ?

gas tanks,I've used about 6% (Harris 20% then add water to fill up the approx 3 gal tank). Put steel/zinc plated nuts/nails in it (not stainless) that will attract a magnet. Swish the tank a couple times a day to move the nails/nuts around. Drain, use telescoping magnet to pull last bits of...

Thanks for the clarity :) Never knew I could paint over sanded clear coat. That makes sense then.

How the heck did you get the white line so uniform when setting up the masking? Also, did you sand down the red before painting the white or after? I did some testing on some spare sheets of metal and sanding tended to rub the red into the white unless I was UBER careful and going along the...

    Top end / Initial Startup

Check your static timing first IMO I did mine by disconnecting the leads to the condenser and coils while the tank was off so it isolated the points and I could just use the meter on continuity mode and listen for the points to kick in and out. I adjusted it to the right of the 2 marks to cut...

    Any Harley guys here?

Blue and White Heritage Softtails has always caught my eye. replace those bars and put the classic windhshield on it can call it a day. My rule of Thumb is to always spend the extra $ to get the better bike or the bike I like better.

I like the clean look of the red one with the white pin stripe. I just started on my projects. Removing the custom paint from the '78 XS650. Starting on the side panels and using citri strip. Overnight with citristrip covered with plastic wrap.

Camshaft timing - Is my engine timed one crankshaft tooth out?

I have been wanting to see if I could get a bore scope in there to view the timing mark. I have yet to try it. I also worry about the scope being stick too :(

Camshaft timing - Is my engine timed one crankshaft tooth out?

Points gap/dwell time affects this am I not correct? will he really know before doing a timing/dwell check while running? Another thought is the cam lobe may be deformed/galled? My chain was stretched and the cam was correct on the chain (as correct as it could be with stretched chain) and the...

    1980 Xs650 special 2 issues running right

Sounds like a fuel mixture issue to me. Is the bike stock, stock air filter? was it running correct before and now its doing this or this is your first attempt to get it running right? Clean carbs recently? If so, detail what you did and any parts changes.
